Article Published by: BYM News - Anne Millet - August 3rd, 2006From September 24th until October 1st 2006, the 28th Régates Royales in Cannes-Panerai Trophy organised by the Société des Régates de Cannes (France) supported by the Yacht Club de Cannes, is expecting close to two hundred Classic Yachts within the glamorous bay of Cannes.
It?s no wonder why since 1859, the world of yachting has picked Cannes as its playground. Very few bays actually offer such as a pleasant environment to watch as a sweet navigation venue. For over a century, the most beautiful yachts in the world face off in the most enchanting bay bordered by the Lérins islands, with the Esterel and the Mercantour mounts as outstanding decor. For over 70 days a year, the Cannes sailing course welcomes numerous regattas. But without any doubt, the Cannes Régates Royales each and every last week in september are the highlights of the season, attracting over 200 of the most beautiful yachts in the world, from up to 50 meters in length. For an entire week, these splendid and for some of them hundred years old splendors of the sea, face off against each other in fierce yet fair battles. Sailing close to the beaches and piers, they provide spectators of all kinds, connoisseurs or plain curious visitors from all over Europe with the most delightful vision. All it takes to share the magic and the excitement of hundred years of yachting is to stroll along the sea shore or walk the wharfs before or after the regattas.
Alain Giese, long range seaman, Trimmer on Tuiga ?The bay of Cannes is magnificent. And that makes concentrating on your job even harder when the show on the race course is so extraordinary that one can easily forget his on duty on board. This bay is magic. But one needs to get familiar with it as it gets at times very demanding. To that extend, the Régates Royales are indeed a true sporting event as one must anticipate the shifty and irregular winds or play around the currents? in short, take full advantage of the entire race course. The closeness of the ships in port definitely contributes to the friendly atmosphere of the event. Even the Classics acknowledge this?.
In the truest yachting tradition, the Régates Royales ?Panerai Trophy- from September 24th until October 1st will enlighten the end of the Mediterranean season. The regatta will provide an unforgettable show to both participants and spectators alike.
